Brookshire’s offers senior hour, discount | Covid-19

Effective Wednesday, Brookshire Grocery Co. is offering a temporary 5% daily discount for senior citizens, through Tuesday, May 5, in all four banners it operates – Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and FRESH by Brookshire’s. The discount is available to guests age 60 or older with valid ID. BGC is also strongly encouraging that the first hour of operations be reserved as a dedicated time for senior citizens. The company is asking for the community’s help in honoring this practice and in moving any senior guests to the front of the check-out line throughout the day. “Since 1928, courteous and compassionate service has remained at the core of who we are and what we stand for,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for Brookshire Grocery Co. “We believe it is incredibly important for all of us to be kind to those around us. During these times of concern about COVID-19, we are asking you to join in our efforts to take care of our senior neighbors and others who are most vulnerable. We are eternally grateful for our guests for their support and patience, and to our employees for their incredible service, during these unprecedented times.” BGC has waived fees for all guests...

Coronavirus causing sales jumps, online price gouging

The coronavirus (COVID-19) is affecting consumer behavior and creating problems on third-party marketplaces. According to data from omnichannel commerce platform Bloomreach, during the week of Feb. 23-29, revenue sales for masks increased 590% from the week prior. Other products receiving substantial week-over-week bumps in revenue sales included hand sanitizers (420%), Clorox/Lysol wipes (184%), canned food (183%), disinfectants (178%), bottled/packaged water (78%), hand soap (33%), and toilet paper/paper towel (26%). Bloomreach pulled this global sales data (with a strong U.S. showing) from its customer base, which includes 250-plus retailers.  In addition, a recent survey from First Insight demonstrates consumers are changing some shopping behaviors as a result of the coronavirus, with generational variations. Overall, 35% of respondents have cut back on spending in preparation for the impact of the coronavirus, with millennials (40%) and Gen Z (41%) cutting back the most compared to baby boomers (23%) and Gen X (36%). A little more than one in five (22%) of respondents say they are buying more products in anticipation of the spread of the virus, with grocery leading as the ...

Take a sneak peek at new products featured in the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show

DENVER — More than 9,000 retail buyers will cram into the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show beginning Wednesday morning to see the work of more than 1,000 exhibiting snow-sports equipment, apparel and accessories companies, bringing another huge boost to Denver’s economy at what is otherwise the slowest season of the year for convention and hotel business. But while city tourism and outdoor-recreation leaders will want to talk about the big numbers for show, which runs through Friday, the truth is that every exhibitor at the Colorado Convention Center is a business that is counting on making contacts and making sales at the event. And for the smaller companies that have invested in traveling to Colorado and hoping to stand out even among giants like The North Face or Obermeyer, what happens over the rest of this week can take on that much more importance for their future. Some of those companies, both small and mid-sized showed off their wares a day early at an OR Snow Show media preview to give a sense of what they will be displaying on the floor and how they will be trying to make an impression on buyers who may see dozens of products a day in their search for the next great shoe or...
