Croda International Plc (LON: CRDA), the speciality chemical company that creates high performance ingredients and technologies

Croda International Plc (LON: CRDA), the speciality chemical company that creates high performance ingredients and technologies relied upon by industries and consumers globally, has today announced its half year results for the six months ended 30 June 2019. “We have delivered a resilient performance in challenging market conditions and against strong prior year comparatives, testament to Croda’s focused strategy. Although Personal Care was significantly impacted by the US/China trade dispute and new sales legislation in China, we saw growth across the rest of the sector. An excellent performance in Life Sciences ensured overall progress in consumer markets, whilst Performance Technologies slowed in line with the wider industry, due to softer end markets in automotive and polymers. “We have a strong pipeline, a robust business model and a strategy to leverage innovation, customer intimacy and sustainability. Life Sciences is expected to show continued progress and in Personal Care we anticipate the US remaining subdued while Asia recovers progressively. Performance Technologies is likely to remain softer until end markets improve. Based on the current challenging economic condit...

Huntsville’s Holtz Leather goes from strapped to sought after

Rick and Collen Holtz and their six children recently turned down an offer to do a reality show about their family business, Holtz Leather Co. Rick and Coleen Holtz were so financially strapped several years ago after a series of failed businesses that they were about to send their kids to live with their grandparents. Desperately casting about for ideas to make money, they designed leather keychains and started selling them on Etsy. They were an immediate success. The north Alabama couple quickly expanded their leatherworking skills by watching YouTube and reading books. Holtz Leather Co. now sells wallets, handbags, journals, portfolios, belts and more worldwide in an enterprise with a story so inspiring that reality TV producers want to do a series on the couple and their six children. The keychain started it all in March of 2015. Soon they were working in a warehouse off U.S. 72 and employed about 25. They kept the space but moved manufacturing operations upstairs in the circa-1926 Lincoln Mill general store on Meridian Street when a friend was renovating the historic building. Upstairs, their employees cut, stitch and “deboss” — imprint names, logos and designs...

My first day in Philadelphia starts with a sandwich — duck confit and Lancaster Swiss pressed

My first day in Philadelphia starts with a sandwich — duck confit and Lancaster Swiss pressed between a seeded roll smeared with pungent fermented mustard. It’s definitely not a cheesesteak, but it’s what’s on the menu at High Street on Market, an all-day café in Center City where local ingredients and gorgeous breads (baked onsite) make for a satisfying first stop after a two-and-a-half-hour drive. It’s the first stop (of many) in a two-day quest to find out what’s good eatin’ in the City of Brotherly Love. Fresh off its James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, Zahav is already packed at 5:15 p.m. Chef Michael Solomonov’s Israeli restaurant — a forebear of the modern Middle Eastern cuisine that’s everywhere now — is arguably the city’s most popular. The Mesibah, a $56 tasting menu featuring a parade of small plates leading up to a fall-off-the-bone lamb shoulder that’s been brined, smoked, and braised in pomegranate until the liquid turns into a sticky glaze, was tempting. But this is a marathon, not a sprint, so I settled into a bowl of the creamiest, silkiest, most soul-satisfying hummus and the saltim, a daily selection of six salads, including shaved fennel with preserved le...

The food additive is known as gum arabic, acacia fibre, and E414, and functions as a natural emulsifier, stabiliser, texturiser, and as a source of fibre. Acacia gum can also be used to extend a product’s shelf life and improve mouthfeel. Having been employed by civilisations since 2650 BC – when it was used to make bandages for Egyptian mummies – today, the exudate’s most ‘critical’ application by FMCGs is as an emulsifier in soft drinks, according to CEO of Alland & Robert, Frédéric Alland. Alland is the fifth-generation to head up acacia gu...

There are few things as soft, sweet, and reminiscent of summer as a linen shirt. Yes, they wrinkle, and no, they don’t hold shape well, but that’s why we love them. Linen, after all, is the most unobtrusive cloth known to man, and for some of us, summer would not be such a tolerable affair without it. Apart from being more lightweight and breathable, linen is 30 times stronger, more hypo-allergenic, and much more environmentally friendly than cotton. The world’s strongest natural fiber, linen comes from the coarse, straw-like fibers of the flaxseed, or linseed plant. It’s a material that goes as far back as the ancient Egyptians, at least, and it was worn and coveted as a symbol of high social standing. Linen is manufactured by first letting the stem of the flax plant rot in slow-moving water — a process known as “retting.” Next, it is beaten, then spun into yarn, woven into cloth, and boiled in fermented bran (glamorous, I know), before being rinsed in buttermilk. Now, if you can somehow imagine the effusive effects of such a procedure, surely you cannot envision a byproduct as silk-like as linen. But, alas, here you have the fabric of pharao...

The race is on to make iPhone screen glass unbreakable

Smartphone makers Apple and Samsung spend billions on research and development each year so that our smartphones and other connected devices continue to evolve into high-tech works of art. Recent reports claim Apple is working on an iPhone with touchless gesture control and/or a curved screen, while its main rival is working on the first foldable Samsung Galaxy X and a Samsung wearable that wraps around our wrists and can be configured into an upright position to be used like a smartphone. Bigger, better and thinner screens are a big part of all these efforts. But one fundamental technology challenge that is surprisingly difficult to solve is glass. What consumers really want, after spending hundreds of dollars on a new smartphone, like the pricey iPhone, is glass that won’t break when dropped. According to market research firm IDC, more than 95 million smartphones are damaged each year from drops, the No. 1 cause of harm to handheld devices (No. 2 is exposure to liquid). That’s roughly $29.8 billion worth of smartphones. “Proving that a device is durable is essential to convince people to pay more for a phone,” said Francisco Jeronimo, senior research di...

Over the past year we’ve reviewed some of the world’s best superbikes – high-end bikes with big price tags – and here are the very best of them. 1. It must have been tested on road.cc between 1 January and 31 December 2019. If we’ve not published a reviewed, it isn’t eligible. 2. It has to have a price tag of over £3,500. We could have made the cut-off £3,000, £5,000 or anything else, but we chose £3,500, as we have for the past couple of years. This category is all about performance – how well the bike accomplishes its job out on the road. There’s likely to be smart engineering innovation behind that performance, but it’s the ride that counts. There are loads of decent bikes out there, and plenty of impressive ones too, but these bikes go well beyond that. They’re among the very best of their kind. What about value? This is the only road.cc Bike of the Year category where we don’t take it into account. This is our money-no-object category. A bike costing £4,000 and a bike costing £10,000 are treated exactly the same. If you want to know what we think about the value of a particular bike, click on the link to the full review. ...
