At HBO’s 2018 post-Emmys party in West Hollywood, Richard Plepler, the network’s chairman and C.E.O., orbited the Pacific Design Center like a spinning top of schmooze. One minute he embraced Thandie Newton, whose outstanding-supporting-actress statue for her role in Westworld gleamed beside her on a dining table. The next, he bantered in a booth with Larry David. Behind them, Peter Dinklage, Gwendoline Christie, and other Game of Thrones cast members held court beneath a gargantuan chandelier of writhing snakes, celebrating its win for outstanding drama series. When Plepler popped up on the other side of the bustling throng in a clinch with John Oliver, whose Last Week Tonight had once again nabbed the award for best variety talk series, I began to wonder if HBO’s boss had cloned himself. The party was the sort of celebrity-packed Emmy-night victory lap that Plepler and his predecessors have presided over for ages. Yet something was different this time. For starters, it was the first ceremony in nearly two decades at which HBO didn’t utterly dominate. Instead, the network that gave birth to Tony Soprano and Carrie Bradshaw, Stringer Bell and Sookie Stackhouse, had tied with Net...

Spryng is tech-laced compression wear for speeding up workout recovery Engadget Engadget save share save share save share save share save share save share Page 1 Page 1 ear icon eye icon Fill 23 text file vr

If you wanted to simplify, CES 2019 could be neatly divided into self-driving cars, giant TVs and health tech. A lot of what we’ve seen of the latter either tracks your movement or is hardware ingrained into workouts. Spryng is a little different, aimed at speeding up your recovery, reducing muscle soreness by stimulating blood circulation. While looking like an unassuming pair of chunky shinguards, these tech-laced wraps expand and contract around your calves, improving blood flow and feeling very nice in the process. The startup showcased the portable muscle recovery tool at CES, and it’s backed up by several scientific papers that elaborate on the medical applications of active compression. On the Spryng, there are three different intensity modes and patterns, but the focus is more on active compression, affecting your circulation in a positive way, rather than the wonderful massage feeling the Spryng conferred to my worn-out legs. The jury is out on compression tights and tops (but if it makes you feel better— why not?), but compression therapy has more tangible benefits to blood circulation issues, like deep vein thrombosis, diabetes and more. That was apparent...

There’s nothing better than a big ol’ bowl of ice cream after a long day, but

There’s nothing better than a big ol’ bowl of ice cream after a long day, but homemade ice cream makes the experience just a little bit sweeter. The good news? The best homemade ice cream makers are budget-friendly, easy to use, and churn out delicious treats in a snap. One thing to consider when shopping around is your own time limit in the kitchen. Depending on how soft you like your ice cream, it takes two to four hours to freeze. If you don’t have a ton of time to wait around, you may want to invest in a model that freezes the ice cream as it churns it to maximize your time. But if you don’t mind waiting for your treat, a standard model will work just fine. Another thing to keep in mind is overall versatility. While an ice cream maker is nice, you may want to go with a machine that makes gelato, sorbet, and other frozen desserts if you like variety in your treats. On the other hand, if you go with a standard ice cream maker, you may be able to save a few bucks. Here’s a list of some of the best homemade ice cream makers out there so you can get that glorious ice cream in your mouth faster. If you want your ice cream experience to be simple, qui...

Lancaster Coffee Co.: Welcoming cafe with delicious menu, creative drinks

Honey lavender and rose pistachio are just a couple of the fragrant latte flavors offered at one of the Buffalo-area’s cutest cafes. Lancaster Coffee Co. & Cafe is a gem of an eatery sparkling in the heart of the Village of Lancaster. We made our trip on a recent weekday, and easily found street parking along Central Avenue. People — and one lounging dog — were enjoying sweet sunshine at a smattering of tables outside, where the pet-friendly exterior includes a water bowl. Inside, the eclectic decor features bold red, black and white checkered patterns and industrial touches. A couple of Audrey Hepburn photographs were on the walls. Cafe tables fill the inside, and a row of chrome stools line the window, where diners can look out over Central Avenue. Owners Tracy and Mike Diegelman are behind the counter at Lancaster Coffee Co. & Cafe. (John Hickey/Buffalo News) The minute we walked in, one of the staff members who spotted the baby, brought us a high chair. We enjoyed that same level of attentive, friendly service throughout our visit. In the end, we couldn’t resist the honey lavender latte ($4.50), blended iced chai ($3.89) and mango smoothie with passion fruit b...

One suspect drew a gun on the 19-year-old Southside man while another fought with the 20-year-old from Rainbow City. The assailants took cellphones from the men before the Rainbow City man’s father came out of the residence and started yelling at them. The robbers ran. Medics checked the two victims at the scene. A 23-year-old Gadsden woman was shot in the leg during an altercation between several women Friday night in the 900 block of Avenue E. Cuba’s First-Ever Classic Cars Contest to Feature 200 Restored Vehicles

Few images are more iconic of modern-day Cuba than its ubiquitous classic American cars, but they’re more than just an Instagram-worthy photo op. Instead, they persist as a symbol of life under Castro-led communism, a rocky Cuban-American history, and of Cubans’ commitment to ingenuity and perseverance. Now, for the first time ever, the country is honoring these automotive icons with a surprising new Concours event to feature more than 200 cars dating from 1919 to 1960 The concept was forged by local, nonprofit car enthusiast club Amigos de Fangio to honor the 120th anniversary of Cuba’s first auto import in 1898. On December 15, the Classic Car Contest will roll down Havana’s Malecón and Paseo de Martí avenues. The massive fleet will be ushered by a 1948 Packard Clipper which will lead the procession to a gathering point in front of the city’s newest and most luxurious hotel, Hotel Iberostar Grand Packard. Here, contest entrants will wait to be judged on just two potential awards: the most popular car and the most original car (a.k.a. the Gran Premio de Conservación) A classic car parade might seem like an ordinary event for Statesiders, even American auto lovers...

Fully rubbery integrated electronics from high effective mobility intrinsically stretchable semiconductors

An intrinsically stretchable rubbery semiconductor with high mobility is critical to the realization of high-performance stretchable electronics and integrated devices for many applications where large mechanical deformation or stretching is involved. Here, we report fully rubbery integrated electronics from a rubbery semiconductor with a high effective mobility, obtained by introducing metallic carbon nanotubes into a rubbery semiconductor composite. This enhancement in effective carrier mobility is enabled by providing fast paths and, therefore, a shortened carrier transport distance. Transistors and their arrays fully based on intrinsically stretchable electronic materials were developed, and they retained electrical performances without substantial loss when subjected to 50% stretching. Fully rubbery integrated electronics and logic gates were developed, and they also functioned reliably upon mechanical stretching. A rubbery active matrix based elastic tactile sensing skin to map physical touch was demonstrated to illustrate one of the applications. Rubber-like electronics that can be reversibly stretched and relaxed are in high demand for a wide range of applications such a...

Nimble portable/wireless chargers review: Eco-friendly designs, but high prices for such low specs

Mophie is well known for both the quality of its products and the hefty price tag attached to them, so we were interested when we heard that a handful of its employees had splintered off to start a new, eco-mindful power accessory company called Nimble. With consumer cost-cutting recyclable packaging and a focus on renewable materials, we were curious to see if Nimble could disrupt the battery and charger status quo — a highly competitive market. Unfortunately, Nimble’s specs and prices just can’t beat the competition.  We reviewed both Nimble’s extensive collection of batteries and its wireless charging accessories — a much more interesting subject now that Google has bequeathed the Pixels with Qi. Unfortunately, for all of us, we found Nimble’s batteries to carry a premium in price that wasn’t supported by product performance. Although in most cases we were impressed with the style and general build quality, as well as the concept of reduced environmental impact, these batteries and wireless chargers are a tough sell on appearance alone. Nimble offers batteries/portable chargers (a name I hate) in four sizes named by the number of extra days they ...
