Putting Crimpers To The Test: How Good Are Our Crimp Tools?

Almost every project of mine from the last quarter century, if it has contained any wiring, has featured somewhere at least one crimp connector. There are a multiplicity of different types of crimp, but in this case I am referring to the ubiquitous variety with a red, blue, or yellow coloured plastic sleeve denoting the wire size they are designed for. They provide a physically robust and electrically sound connection that is resistant to wire fatigue due to vibration, and that can carry hefty currents at high voltages without any problems. You might expect this to now head off into the detail of crimp connection, but my colleague Dan has already detailed what makes a good or a bad crimp. Instead recently my constant searches for weird and wonderful things to review for your entertainment led me to a new crimp tool, and thence to a curiosity about the effectiveness of different styles of tool. So I’m going to evaluate the three different crimping methods available to me, namely my shiny new ratchet crimp pliers, my aged simple crimp pliers, and for comparison an ordinary pair of pliers. I’ll take a look at the physical strength of each crimping method followed by its electrical ...

Worcester Living: Vintage campers receive new lease on life from area couples – Entertainment & Life – telegram.com

A few summers ago, when Vincent Hemmeter and Nicole Watson camped out for three days at the Cars of Summer in Worcester, their campsite at Green Hill Park was from a different era — several, in fact. A Schilling pop-up auto camp from the late 1910s fastened onto the running board of their 1929 Model A. An auto refrigerator with water-filled canvas bags kept food cool; a running-board kitchenette stored dry goods. They brought along their 1950 Kenskill camper, pulled by a 1962 Falcon station wagon, and set up a 1972 Volkswagen bus. Adding to the ambiance, the couple, who own three of Worcester’s most popular bars and music venues, Vincent’s, Ralph’s and Nick’s, wore period costumes. “We were bombarded with questions,” says Watson. “People were really excited. From little kids to old men — they really wanted to know everything.” In fact, the popularity of recreational camping in the United States dates to the late 1860s, when a young minister, William H.H. Murray, published the first camping guidebook, “Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp-Life in the Adirondacks.” His message of nature as an escape from the grit and grime of urban life resonated as much then as it d...

By several metrics, 2018 was a great year for literature in translation. The National Book Foundation

By several metrics, 2018 was a great year for literature in translation. The National Book Foundation successfully reinstituted its translation prize, with Yoko Tawada’s The Emissary, translated from the Japanese by Margaret Mitsutani, receiving the award; the HBO adaptation of My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, translated from the Italian by Ann Goldstein, received rave reviews, strong ratings, and a renewal for a second season; and a number of best books of 2018 lists contained at least one title in translation. Many in the industry see an uptick in interest in international literature among reviewers and booksellers. “Booksellers—some of the best readers out there—were the earliest and most enthusiastic supporters of translated literature, and they are a major reason why literature in translation is finding a wider readership these days,” said Mandy Medley of Coffee House Press. “Since the 2016 election, American readers have also started looking beyond the traditional—white—American canon to international literature, not just for new perspectives and ideas but for great storytelling. And thanks to the work of a lot of independent presses, they don’t have to look far. Tra...

Nissan adds Leaf Plus models for 2019, extending battery range up to 215 miles

The new 2019 Nissan Leaf Plus has a 62 kWh battery pack and an EPA-estimated range of up to 215 miles. Regular models have a 150-mile range. Nissan redesigned the groundbreaking Leaf all-electric hatchback just last year for its second generation, which included extending the driving range on a single charge to an estimated 150 miles, up from 107 miles on the 2017 model. Now, for 2019, the Leaf Plus model has been added to the lineup, which gave our Leaf SL Plus tester an estimated range of up to 215 miles on a full charge, according to EPA estimates. Many electric vehicle experts believe that a minimum range of 200 miles is what consumers want, so they can avoid having anxiety about whether they will run out of power prematurely. Curiously, the automaker delivered this version of the Leaf to me by actually driving it to my home, rather than bringing it on a trailer as had been done just last year with the new 2018 Leaf. I live about 220 miles from where the delivery originated, and the driver told me he had stopped twice along the way to recharge, including a stop not far from me that allowed the battery to be topped off so I would receive the car with nearly a full charge. In ...

How To Swap Out A BMS On A Frame Pack … Lickity Split

With modern 18650 cells almost without fail, every problem with your battery which is NOT caused by improper mounting and physical damage to the battery is going to be the BMS. The BMS handles the charging and discharging of your pack making sure that there are no problems with any of the cell groupings. When a cell stops working and the voltages are too high or too low it will shut down power on the entire pack. For whatever reason BMS’s can become flakey and every problem I’ve had with my packs could be traced back to a problem with the BMS. A ‘leaky’ BMS will slowly drain down one or more of the cells in the grouping causing the entire pack to be out of sync. If it drains the power on a cell grouping down too low then the pack will not work and you’ll have to remove the dead cells as shown in this article. The problem is if you replace the cell groupings without replacing the BMS the problem will just occur again. This article will go into troubleshooting faulty BMS’s and how to replace them in about the amount of time it takes you to swap out a flat tire. Did you know Americans spend more time doing their taxes every year than having sex? I think we have our priorities way o...

ZF, Detroit Free Press If you ever wanted to protect your car with bubble-wrap, German supplier ZF has the feature you’ve been waiting for. A new airbag that deploys from the side of a vehicle before a collision can reduce the severity of occupant injuries 40%, according to ZF, which is bidding to become a major force in safety engineering in addition to its longstanding expertise in steering and transmissions. The airbag, which looks like a pontoon strapped to the car’s side, is packed inside the sill plates, below the vehicle’s doors. Clear Bopp Packing Tape The system uses cameras, radar and lidar to determine when a collision is unavoidable, igniting the air bag milliseconds before the oncoming vehicle strikes. The sensors will also communicate with safety systems inside the vehicle, for instance adju...
